Flange bolts are commonly supplied in two flange designs — serrated and non-serrated (plain flange). Serrated flange bolts have small ridges machined into the underside of the flange, which bite slightly into the mating surface as the bolt is torqued down. This adds extra resistance against loosening in high-vibration environments such as engine mounts, exhaust systems, and chassis components. Non-serrated flange bolts are used where the mating surface finish needs to stay undisturbed, or where the joint doesn't see significant vibration.
