Hex Bolts Guide - New Star Industries

Quick Summary

A hex bolt is a six-sided head fastener used to join components in structural, automotive, and industrial assemblies. This guide covers every aspect — types, grades (4.6 to 10.9), sizes (M6–M64), coatings, DIN/ISO/IS standards, and torque values — to help engineers and buyers make the right specification decision.

What Are Hex Bolts?

A hex bolt (also called a hexagonal head bolt or hex head bolt) is a fastener with a six-sided (hexagonal) head and a threaded shank. The head is designed to be driven by a wrench or spanner, making it one of the most widely used fastener types in the world.

Hex bolts are used to join two or more components together — typically by pairing with a nut, or by threading into a tapped (pre-threaded) hole. They are the backbone of mechanical assemblies in automotive, construction, infrastructure, solar, and industrial sectors.

Key fact: Hex bolts account for the majority of fastener consumption globally. Their simple, robust geometry allows easy tightening with standard tools, making them the go-to choice for high-load structural applications.

At New Star Industries, we have manufactured hex bolts since 1961 — supplying automotive OEMs, railway contractors, solar EPC companies, and pre-engineered building (PEB) manufacturers across India and for export.

Hex Bolt vs Hex Screw — What's the Difference?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a technical distinction in engineering standards:

Parameter Hex Bolt Hex Screw
Thread coveragePartial (half thread)Full thread to head
Standard referenceDIN 931 / ISO 4014DIN 933 / ISO 4017
Typical useWith nut & washer, structural jointsThreaded holes, through-bolting
ShankUnthreaded grip length presentFully threaded throughout
Load typeShear & tension loadsPrimarily tension / clamping

In practice, both are driven by the same hex wrench and are often called "hex bolts" generically. New Star Industries manufactures both half-thread (DIN 931) and full-thread (DIN 933) variants across all sizes and grades.

Types of Hex Bolts

Not all hex bolts are the same. The type you need depends on the application, load, environment, and standard required. Here are the main categories:

Standard Hex Bolt (Half Thread)

Partially threaded shank. Ideal for through-bolting with a nut. Resists shear loads effectively. Follows DIN 931 / ISO 4014 / IS 1364 Part 1.

Full Thread Hex Screw

Thread runs the entire shank length. Best for bolting into tapped holes or where maximum thread engagement is required. Follows DIN 933 / ISO 4017 / IS 1364 Part 2.

Heavy Hex Structural Bolt

Larger head and nut dimensions. Designed for high-load steel structures, PEB buildings, and bridges. Follows IS 3757 / ASTM A325.

High Tensile Hex Bolt

Grade 8.8 or 10.9. Heat-treated for maximum strength. Used in automotive, infrastructure, and critical structural assemblies.

Solar / PEB Hex Bolt

Often hot-dip galvanized or ZAC coated for outdoor corrosion resistance. Used in solar panel mounting and pre-engineered building frames.

Foundation Hex Bolt

Anchor bolts embedded in concrete. Used in machinery installation, structural columns, and civil infrastructure bases.

Materials & Construction

The raw material used in hex bolt manufacturing determines its mechanical properties — strength, ductility, corrosion resistance, and suitability for specific environments.

Common Materials

  • Medium Carbon Steel (C35, C45): The most widely used material. Suitable for Grade 4.6, 5.6, and 6.8 bolts. Good machinability and moderate strength.
  • Alloy Steel (SCM435, 42CrMo4, 34Cr4): Used for high tensile grades 8.8 and 10.9. After heat treatment, delivers exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. New Star Industries uses IATF-approved alloy steel grades.
  • Stainless Steel (A2 / A4): Excellent corrosion resistance. Used in food-grade, marine, and chemical environments. Available on request.
  • Boron Steel: Used in automotive structural bolts where high strength and formability are needed simultaneously.

New Star Industries uses spectrometer-verified (Spectro Analysis) raw materials for every production batch, ensuring consistent alloy composition and traceability — a requirement under our IATF 16949:2016 certification.

Manufacturing Process

Our hex bolts are produced through cold forging (for M6–M24) and hot forging (for M30 and above), followed by thread rolling, heat treatment (for grades 8.8 and above), and surface coating. Every batch undergoes hardness testing, proof load testing, and dimensional inspection before dispatch.

Hex Bolt Grades Explained

The grade of a hex bolt indicates its mechanical strength — specifically the tensile strength and yield strength of the material. The grade marking is embossed on the bolt head. New Star Industries manufactures the full range:

4.6
Grade 4.6
400 MPa UTS
240 MPa Yield
General use
5.6
Grade 5.6
500 MPa UTS
300 MPa Yield
Light structural
6.8
Grade 6.8
600 MPa UTS
480 MPa Yield
Medium load
8.8
Grade 8.8
800 MPa UTS
640 MPa Yield
High tensile
10.9
Grade 10.9
1000 MPa UTS
900 MPa Yield
Very high tensile
Grade Min. UTS (MPa) Min. Yield (MPa) Elongation (%) Typical Application
4.640024022General construction, light machinery
5.650030020Light structural, civil work
6.860048012General industrial, equipment
8.880064012Automotive, PEB, infrastructure
10.910009009Heavy automotive, high-load structures

How to read a grade: In "8.8", the first digit (8) × 100 = minimum UTS in MPa. The second digit (8) × 10% of UTS = yield strength. So 8.8 = 800 MPa UTS, 640 MPa yield.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Grade 8.8 and Grade 10.9 hex bolts?
Grade 8.8 has a minimum tensile strength of 800 MPa with a yield strength of 640 MPa. Grade 10.9 is stronger at 1000 MPa UTS and 900 MPa yield, and is typically used in more demanding automotive and structural applications. Both are heat-treated alloy steel. Grade 10.9 bolts should not be substituted with Grade 8.8 in critical applications without an engineering review.
What is DIN 931 vs DIN 933?
DIN 931 is a hex bolt with a partial (half) thread — part of the shank is unthreaded. DIN 933 is a hex screw with a full thread from head to tip. DIN 931 is preferred for through-bolting with a nut in shear applications. DIN 933 is used when bolting into a threaded hole or where maximum thread engagement is required.
What coating is best for outdoor or solar applications?
For outdoor and solar applications, we recommend ZAC (Zinc Aluminium Flake Coating), which provides 1000+ hours of salt spray resistance, or Hot Dip Galvanizing (HDG) for the highest corrosion protection. Both are suitable for 25+ year outdoor service. Trivalent zinc plating is suitable for semi-sheltered outdoor conditions.
What is the largest hex bolt size you manufacture?
New Star Industries manufactures hex bolts up to M64 in diameter and up to 500 mm in length, as per IS, DIN, and ISO standards. For sizes beyond M64 or lengths beyond 500 mm, please contact our team with your drawing for a custom manufacturing quote.
Are your hex bolts approved for railway and infrastructure projects?
Yes. New Star Industries is approved by Indian Railways (RDSO) and has supplied fasteners to NHAI highway projects. We are also IATF 16949:2016 certified. Our quality systems include in-house hardness testing, proof load testing, spectrometer analysis, and Magna flux testing.
Can you manufacture hex bolts to customer drawings or special specifications?
Absolutely. We manufacture fasteners to customer-specific drawings, standards, and requirements — including non-standard grades, special thread pitches, custom coatings, and OEM-specific markings. Please send your drawing to sales@newstarinds.com or WhatsApp us at +91 98784 49198.
